Welcome to ENAS03, ‘Language and Thought’!
Does our language restrict the thoughts we can have? What comes first, thinking or speaking? Does learning a new language shape the way we think? These are some of the questions that have sparked controversy. This course aims at introducing students to a range of issues in relation to language and thought and at providing them with a solid grounding for further participation in the debate. The course brings together findings from linguistics, psychology, and philosophy. It is an advanced course and advanced academic and self-directed learning skills as well as scholarly discourse in English are expected.
We will meet for eight interactive seminars scheduled throughout the course period. All seminars will be held in Zoom or in a hybrid format, and we will use the Canvas platform for course communications, the delivery of course materials, and the submission of assignments.
You should arrange to access the course textbook well ahead of the first session:
- Everett, C. (2013). Linguistic relativity: Evidence across languages and cognitive domains. De Gruyter Mouton. [available electronically through the library]
Additional reading materials will be announced in Canvas at the start of the course.
Assessment:
- Individual written hand-in assignments;
- Individual oral presentation.
