What is KauID? KauID is your digital identity at Karlstad University that allows you to log in to our digital services.


If you have studied at Kau before you do not have to create a new KauID, you can use the same KauID as last time.

2. Register for your course

You need to register on time, not to risk losing your place on the course.
Registration period: 2024-03-18 - 2024-03-25
Log in to My Kau using your KauID to register.

What is My Kau? My Kau is a personal digital service for students at Karlstad University.

It is important that you decline your admission offer if you do not wish to attend the course.


If you have been admitted late, and therefore can´t register on time, contact the administrator.

Welcome to Scientific Methods in Freshwater Ecology (BIAD12) of 2024!

The course will offer you an insight into how research is carried out from the first idea, through planning, study design, practical work, analysis and scientific writing.

The overarching goal of the course, as described in the syllabus, is:

To plan and conduct scientific investigations in freshwater ecosystems, in accordance with research guidelines and with the requirements of certification, identify statistical analysis models, means of illustration, and oral and written techniques of presenting collected research data in limnic environments and analyse and evaluate such material.

The course is given as a second year course within the Master Programme in Biology: Ecology and Conservation Biology, and provides students with essential procedural and declarative skills in scientific writing, statistics and methods useful for future career steps within both academia (master thesis, doctoral studies) and society at large.

Obligatory activities

There will be two obligatory activities planned for the following preliminary dates:

1) April 19-24: Lab experiment and fish tagging at KAU and field trip to River Ätran

2) May 27 – 29: Electrofishing in theory and practice (close to Karlstad)

Examination

The final grade of this 15-hp course (U, G, VG) is based on seminars, lab- and field exercises and the two individual essays (reports).
